Talking art with Rory Dobner – the most imaginative creative I’ve ever met
There’s something very inspiring about successful artists and Rory Dobner is certainly that!
I’ve met many people recording these podcasts, and in my career as an interior stylist and writer – but none are as incredibly imaginative and creative as the artist Rory Dobner.
Known for his ink drawings of animals- like cats in bowler hats with monocles- seen below, after chatting with him I now have a much deeper understanding of how he works and brings his creatures to life. Each animal has a story and a character of their own. From tutu dancing ants to cigarette smoking goldfish, even the pet portraits he’s been commissioned to do become his version of their canine lives. Dog collars become gang necklaces, mouths have little smirks and top hats look tattered – because the owners said how the pet loves to chew things. Rory builds on their character and takes it to another level.
Fundamentally the focus of his art is to make people laugh and “make you daydream a bit’ and that’s exactly what he does. Talking to him for this podcast episode was truly inspirational and just made me want to dig out a fine-nibbed fountain pen and get drawing.
